Need help selecting the correct product?

The backing plate or pad provides support for the abrasive disc to do its work. The wrong pad will not allow the disc to perform at its optimum level. In addition, the pad will take up space on the tool spindle to keep it from impinging on the work area.

Materials:

Rubber is very durable yet flexible. It provides a longer service life and can be used for heavy duty applications. It is also more expensive. Use rubber pads for grinding, heavier sanding, rust removal and weld removal. Rubber pads are commonly used with abrasive discs that are 50 grit and lower. Circle Cool, Circle Flex, Mini Quick Change, Other Rubber Pads.

Plastic is lighter and flexible. It is used in lighter duty applications as well as higher speed applications. It is less expensive than rubber. Use plastic pads for sanding, finishing and when an operator must handle the tool for extended periods of time. Poly Cool Air-Cooled, Poly Flex Smooth Faced, Other Plastic Pads.

Phenolic is strong, lightweight, flexible and can attain high speeds. It is composed of hardened resins in a cotton cloth substrate. A variety of flexibilities can be attained by changing the quantity of plies of the phenolic cloth in the manufacturing process. Use phenolic plates for sanding, finishing, high speed and flexible applications. Phenolic plates are often used in marble and stone finishing, auto body repair, and other soft metal applications. Sav-A-Disc, Depressed Center Phenolic Plates, Phenolic Plates and Sets.
